Obesity Awareness Month From Our Montebello Veterinary Team
At Casillas Veterinary Hospital, our Montebello veterinary team is happy to serve your pet with the highest standard of care in East Los Angeles, Lynwood, and the surrounding areas. Our animal-loving staff knows that your pet is a part of your family, which is why they treat all animals as one of their own. With National Obesity Awareness Month quickly approaching, we thought now would be a great time to remind pet owners that carrying around extra weight can be dangerous to pets. If your pet is overweight, our veterinary team can provide you with guidance and resources for helping your pet reach a safer, healthier weight over time.
Realizing the Dangers of Pet Obesity
Many people find “chubby” pets to be cute or humorous, but in reality, pet obesity can be downright deadly. At the very least, carrying around extra weight will make your pet more lethargic and reduce his or her quality of life. However, there are many ways in which obesity can seriously affect your pet’s health and lifespan. Consider, for example, that obese pets are much more likely to develop diabetes at some point in their lives. Combine that with the fact that overweight and obese pets are also more prone to heart problems and respiratory problems, including difficulty breathing. And of course, there’s the added strain that extra weight puts on your pet’s body. This could end up leading to joint pain and arthritis in your pet, which can severely affect quality of life and make it difficult or downright painful to get around.
How to Know if Your Pet is Overweight or Obese
Often times, it’s easy enough to tell if your pet is overweight just by looking at them from above. A pet that is at a healthy weight will have a narrow body that is more-or-less the same width from above as the broadest part of the shoulders. An overweight or obese pet will have an obvious, round protrusion on either side.
The best way to keep tabs on your pet’s weight, however, is to bring him or her in for regular veterinary exams. During your pet’s exam, we’ll weigh your pet and provide you with information on whether or not your pet’s weight is healthy. If not, we can assist you in narrowing down your pet’s ideal weight and provide you with tips and resources to help your pet achieve that weight over time. Depending on your pet’s diet and nutrition, we may also make some nutritional recommendations to help your pet lose weight and enjoy a better quality of life.
