Getting a new pet is a fun time for your family. You’re ready to play with it, feed it, and begin training, but you’ve probably got a lot of questions. If you’ve never had a puppy or kitten before, it’s important that you educate yourself in how to keep your new pet healthy. Just like people, pets benefit from regular medical care. Make sure your pet gets the right treatment and you’re sure to have many happy years together.

Our Casillas Veterinarians Advise New Pet Owners in Montebello, Commerce, and Lynwood

Our veterinarians are experienced in caring for pets of every age. They know that a pet that has a good start in life is more likely to live a long and healthy one. Bring your pet to our Montebello, Commerce or Lynwood office as soon as it’s gotten used to being around you for a day or two. We’ll give your pet its first checkup, and advise you on these important health issues:

  • All pets need vaccinations throughout their life, from the first weeks on. We’ll let you know what vaccines your pet needs, and can set up a schedule that fits in with your lifestyle. Here in California dogs are required to receive a regular series of rabies vaccines, but there are others you’ll need to get to keep your pet healthy.
  • If you’re not planning to breed your pet, get it spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Not only will it prevented unwanted litters, spaying and neutering have proven health benefits for your pets.
  • Puppies and kittens need a regular schedule of vaccines and checkups. Our office will advise you on the particular dates in question, but in general a visit every three to four weeks is advised. Once the vaccine series is finished, older dogs should see the veterinarian once a year for any needed booster shots and for a wellness exam.
  • The obesity epidemic in this country isn’t just in humans. We’re seeing increasing numbers of overweight dogs and cats in our practice. The best way to keep your pet at a healthy weight is to give it a healthy lifestyle. Allow dogs to run free in a yard or park, and take them on frequent walks. Avoid treats for all pets, as this can cause weight gain.
