It’s that time of year again, time to start thinking about protecting your pet from fleas and ticks. As we get into the warmer seasons, parasites like fleas and ticks become more active. Fleas and ticks are not just a nuisance that can make your dog or cat miserable, but they can also carry dangerous diseases that can affect you and your family. Fleas, in particular, can swiftly take over your home, requiring expensive measures to get rid of them. Luckily, there are effective ways to keep the pesky critters away. Here are some parasite prevention tips, from the vets at Casillas Veterinary Hospitals in East Los Angeles, Lynwood, and Montebello, you should follow this summer.

Keep Pets Indoors

Prevention by keeping your pets away from the areas where fleas and ticks live is the best method, but it’s not foolproof. Even if your animals are always inside, you can bring the parasites in on your clothing. If you take your dog or cat for a walk, try to keep them off of high grass if possible.

Spot-on Parasite Prevention

These are lotions that you can get from your veterinarian that you apply to your pet’s back once monthly. They are affordable, not likely to cause any side effects, and they are effective.

Oral Treatments

Your vet can advise you on the various oral medications that are available to fight parasites. They are a bit more expensive, but they protect your pets’ whole body, whereas other methods can leave spots vulnerable to parasites. Some are specific to treating for fleas, others for ticks. Oral medications are probably the best choice for animals who spend a lot of time outdoors.
